Following recent burglaries on their estate, a homeowner in Micklefield contacted Zone CCTV & Burglar Alarms for advice on improving their home security. We visited the property for a free site survey and discussed the options with the customer. Our recommendations covered CCTV, a burglar alarm and improvements to the lighting around the property.

We also checked the existing door locks as part of the visit. These were already high-standard three-star anti-snap locks, so there was no need to replace them. This allowed the customer to concentrate on the areas where improvements would be most useful.

The customer chose a Hikvision IP LiveGuard G3 camera system. These cameras combine recording with features designed to draw attention to someone approaching the property. Human detection helps identify people entering the configured detection areas and sends alerts to the customer through the Hik-Connect app.

Each camera supports up to four detection lines, allowing alerts to be set around the areas that matter to the homeowner. This gives flexibility when configuring detection for approaches such as the front, side or rear of a property. The aim is to make the customer aware of activity while it is happening, giving them an opportunity to check the cameras.

The LiveGuard G3 cameras have built-in strobe lights that can activate when a detection rule is triggered. Automated spoken warnings can also tell a person that the property is under surveillance. These features provide a visible and audible deterrent alongside the CCTV recording.

Built-in microphones allow audio to be recorded with the footage. Where captured clearly, speech and other sounds may provide useful context when reviewing an incident. This can help build a clearer picture of what happened than video alone.

Alongside the CCTV, we installed a new wireless Ajax burglar alarm connected to the customer’s mobile phones. App notifications alert the customer when the alarm activates. The setup also includes call centre contact, giving the customer another way to receive an alert.

The alarm has a backup SIM connection to provide an alternative communication route if the broadband connection fails. This reduces reliance on the home internet connection for sending alarm notifications. With neighbours close by, the customer can also contact someone nearby if they need assistance.

We recommended improving the lighting around the property, including more consistent illumination at night. Good lighting helps the cameras capture clearer detail and makes it easier for the homeowner to see what is happening outside. It can also help discourage someone from approaching unnoticed.

The lighting advice formed part of our wider approach to the job. CCTV, an alarm, suitable locks and outdoor lighting each have a useful role in home security. We explained the options so the customer could make an informed decision.
