Zone CCTV recently completed a major CCTV upgrade project for Leeds University, modernising their entire security network. With over 140 new high-definition IP cameras, a centralised control room, and body-cam integration, the University now benefits from clearer evidence, improved monitoring, and a future-proofed security solution.
The Challenge
During our initial site surveys, it became clear that the University had a wide mix of cameras installed over the years. Some were outdated analogue models, others were newer IP cameras, and many were connected to different recorders spread across various campus locations. This setup made it difficult for the security team to view, manage, and export footage efficiently when it was needed for investigations.
The Solution
Working alongside the University’s security team, our senior engineers carried out a series of detailed surveys and designed a new system that would:
We systematically upgraded the cameras across the University, replacing old analogue units with 4MP high-definition wide angle IP cameras. These deliver crystal-clear images at high frame rates, ensuring that even slowed-down playback can capture facial details and key evidence clearly.
Centralised Control Room
To improve daily operations, we installed a new centralised CCTV hub. All cameras now feed into a central server and are displayed across a four-screen video wall, allowing operators to monitor multiple areas of the campus at once.
The system was integrated with 2 x 128 channel NVR’s, providing both resilience and plenty of storage space for additional hard drives in the future. A joystick controller was also fitted, enabling operators to quickly navigate through cameras and control PTZ functions with ease.
Integration of Body Cameras
As part of the upgrade, University security body-worn cameras were also linked to the central server. This makes it simple for operators to playback and export both CCTV and body-cam footage in one place, improving efficiency and evidential processes.
The Result
The project has transformed how CCTV is managed across the University, providing both staff and students with a safer environment.
