Common Hikvision Problem #1 – “Hik Connect Offline”

This usually means the recorder is no longer connected to the internet – possibly due to a router change, password update, or loose ethernet cable.

There are many reasons why the Hik connect app is displaying offline. Here are a few:

  • Change of broadband router
  • Change of broadband password
  • The broadband has been rebooted
  • The broadband router has had a recent firmware upgrade
  • The broadband is not working
  • The ethernet cable has become loose from the back of the DVR’s LAN port or is not plugged in correctly to the broadband router
  • There is a fault with the DVR

To solve this problem, we need to get the recorder connected again to the broadband.

Steps to Resolve “Hik Connect Offline”
  • Check the ethernet cable is securely plugged into the recorders LAN port and also a port in the broadband router.
  • Connect a monitor or TV to the recording device. Right click on the mouse and select system at the top of the screen, this is a picture of gear cog.
  • Go to network and de-select DHCP, click apply at the bottom
  • Click live view at the top of the screen to come out of the menu.
  • Click the system (picture of the gear cog)
  • On the left hand side, click network , re-select DHCP and click apply at the bottom. The recorder should then find an IP address.
  • Click on advanced and then platform access.
  • It should now say online. This means it is connected to the network and you should be able to view the cameras live on the Hik connect app on your mobile phone or tablet.

Common Hikvision Problem #2 – How to unbind a Hikvision DVR recorder?

What does unbind mean? It means that the recorder is already paired up with another user. For example if you move info a new property and inherit an existing CCTV system, the old users may not have cleared their details off it. This will mean you will not be able to connect it to your mobile phone until it is unbound.

There are a couple of ways to unbind a recorder.

We’ll go through the two most popular ways here.

Option 1 – Unbind via Recorder
  • Make sure sure the recorder is on its latest firmware.
  • Right click on the mouse, so it displays the icons at the top of the screen. Then click on system, it looks like a cog
  • Click on network on the right hand side
  • Click on advanced
  • Click on platform access
  • Click on unbind
  • It will ask you to input the DVR’s password.
Option 2 – Unbind via App

If you don’t have a monitor connected to your DVR, you can still unbind and reconnect the system using the Hik-Connect mobile app. Follow these steps to manually add your recorder and take control of your CCTV system:

  • Download the Hik-Connect app from the App Store (iPhone) or Play Store (Android).
  • Open the app and register an account (or log in if you already have one).
  • Tap the ‘+’ icon in the top right corner of the app.
  • Locate the serial number on the sticker attached to your recorder – it typically starts with a letter followed by 8 digits.
  • Choose ‘Manual Adding’ when prompted.
  • Select ‘Hik-Connect Domain’ as the method.
  • Enter the serial number, then tap Add.
  • If successful, the recorder will now be added to your app.

Common Hikvision Problem #3
How To Export & Save CCTV Footage to A USB Stick | Hikvision DVR & NVR for High-Quality Backup

How to you back up footage on a USB stick directly form a Hikvision CCTV DVR Recorder?

This video shows you how to export and save CCTV footage to a USB stick directly from your Hikvision recorder. This step-by-step tutorial will show you how to back up the CCTV footage from both DVR’s and NVR’s the process is similar.

This method allows the backups to be downloaded in a higher video quality, longer recording duration, and is faster and more reliable than exporting footage via the Hik-Connect mobile app. A CCTV monitor or TV will be required and plugged in via a HDMI or VGA cable.

In this video, you’ll learn:

  • How to locate the footage you want to export
  • How to insert and format a USB stick
  • How to back up CCTV footage in high resolution
  • Why exporting directly from the DVR/NVR is the best method for long recordings

Whether you’re securing evidence, reviewing incidents, or performing routinebackups, this method is ideal for business owners, and home users alike. CCTV eventually records over itself, making it an excellent way to back up important video evidence.

Why export from the recorder instead of the app?

  • Higher image quality (full resolution)
  • Export longer video files with no compression
  • No internet or remote access issues
  • Works even if your mobile app isn’t connected

Keep your security footage safe, clear, and accessible with this simple USB backup method.

More About Our CCTV Repair & Upgrade Services

At Zone CCTV, we take pride in delivering CCTV systems that are fully fit for purpose. Every installation begins with a detailed site survey, where we assess your specific needs, risks, and environment to ensure that the system we design performs exactly as intended – whether it’s for deterrence, detection, or identification.

Unfortunately, not all installers follow this approach. We’re often called out to assess systems that look impressive on the surface, but fail to meet the basic requirements for effective surveillance. One of the most common – and costly – mistakes we encounter is the use of incorrect camera lenses.

Choosing the wrong lens type can drastically affect the size and clarity of recorded subjects. When subjects appear too small on screen, identification becomes nearly impossible – particularly with older cameras that lack HD resolution or electronic zoom. A non-HD camera may produce images with just 40,000 pixels per frame, compared to over 10 million pixels on modern digital cameras. The Home Office recommends that, to reliably identify an individual, they should occupy at least 50% of the screen width – a standard many poorly specified systems fail to meet.

Even with the right lens, positioning matters. We’ve seen brand-new systems that underperform simply because the cameras were installed at the wrong angle or height. Poor positioning negates the benefits of even the highest-quality equipment and can render crucial footage useless in the event of an incident.

Other basic errors that can massively reduce a CCTV system’s functionality:

  • Cameras too high or not leaving enough space above head – if a camera is too high you can only get a top-down view of a head. This can lead to identity problems. Similarly, if you do not account for variations in height you could leave out your subjects head altogether.

  • Failing to properly consider power supply – a camera needs to be powered 24/7 to give you full coverage. This function is essential but often not considered properly.

  • Unaware of structures blocking the field of view – permanent or temporary structures such as signs, phone boxes or even daily business parking can below entrances and exits that were clear on installation.

  • Not considering the effects of daily and seasonal changes of light and foliage – glare on camera and encroaching shadows can easily obscure a subject. Equally as bad, seasonal growth can completely block a camera in the worst of circumstances.

  • Vandals and Weather – The vandal problem is clear, however many people fail to consider high winds and heavy rain. All of these can damage cameras and lead to costly repairs if not done properly.

  • Unable to maintain – cameras need to be cleaned or repaired periodically. Failing to do this can reduce a CCTV cameras effect.
